Perhaps the most effective demonstration of any fire prevention system is to study actual occurrences and the role these products played in diverting disaster. At the end of last month, what could have resulted in the large scale destruction of a supermarket in London, turned out to be a testament to the value of a good quality sprinkler system. Fire started in the loading area of the store in the early hours of the morning, and had it not been for the sprinkler system activation, would probably have caused wide-scale damage to the building, contents and perhaps injury or loss of life.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but the sprinklers came to life as the flames appeared, so eventual fire damage was minimal and nobody was hurt. Four fire engines attended the scene with an excess of 20 firemen wearing breathing apparatus. A spokesman for London Fire Brigade stated that “Thankfully this building was fitted with sprinklers, which helped to prevent the fire from spreading into the supermarket and causing more serious damage”. He went on to say,”While not always required by fire regulations, sprinklers are a potentially life saving tool, which keep people and properties safer and can reduce the cost of repairing fire damage.”
London Fire Brigade actively supports and encourages the installation of sprinkler systems as a powerful asset in fire prevention, and in January of this year it called for housing providers in the capital and throughout the UK, to implement such systems to help ensure the safety of particularly vulnerable tenants.
A priority of the brigade is to reduce fires in buildings used as care homes and sheltered accommodation, by as much as three percent by 2016. It firmly believes that sprinkler systems play a significant role in reducing fire related injury and death.
It is compulsory for commercial, multi-occupancy and non-domestic premises in England and Wales to ensure that buildings are subject to a ‘suitable and sufficient’ fire risk assessment, carried out under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. If this is deemed to be insufficiently done, there can be an unlimited fine or up to two years in prison.
